The Estonian Islands Energy Agency and Saare Development Centre organized a seminar for interested participants, where experiences from over four decades of wind energy development on the island of Gotland were shared.
How has a balance been found there between community interests, nature conservation, and energy production? What lessons have been learned, and what smart solutions have been implemented?
The seminar offered practical insights and knowledge that can help make wise and well-considered decisions regarding wind energy deployment in Estonia.
About the speaker:
Andreas Wickman is a board member of the Swedish Wind Energy Association and a long-time leader of community-based projects. He has been involved in wind energy development on Gotland since the 1980s and spoke at the seminar candidly about the challenges, community engagement, fair land compensation, environmental impact, and technological solutions.
The presentation is in English, with a brief introduction in Estonian.
The seminar was funded by the European Union, the Rural Development Programme sub-measure 2 “Development of SME competencies in regional development centres,” and the EU LIFE Programme.
The seminar took place on April 22, 2025, at TalTech Kuressaare College.
